Artistic programming in libraries

Many public and non-public libraries offer exhibition spaces to engage visitors with artists’ work or new perspectives on art. In many council-run libraries this might be a space or a selection of walls on which visual art, archive material or books are often displayed, or it might include digital or more interactive artworks. In some cases, libraries can dedicate larger spaces to exhibitions and major libraries like the British Library often run a varied paid-for exhibitions programme from their own collections or with loans from elsewhere that offer visitors high-quality art experiences and the library an additional income stream. This is often accompanied by a programme of talks and events that give further interpretation to the exhibition or collection on display.
