Gary has worked in the heritage sector for over 35 years and is one of the founding directors of Butler Hegarty Architects, an architectural practice that specialises in works to listed buildings.  He is widely recognised for his extensive knowledge of both historic building techniques and timber frame construction and recent work includes the award-winning repair and conversion of Sandycombe Lodge, Turner’s House in Twickenham.

Gary has pursued a career that has combined his passion for architecture with a commitment to education with roles at Cambridge, UCL and Nottingham. As well as previously acting as architectural degree Director and Principle lecturer at Kingston University.
